Markus Fuerderer-Cubeoled Luminaire

At Design Interviews

Interview with Markus Fuerderer : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Markus Fuerderer : Depth, Transparency and Contrast - Cubeoled interprets these fundamentals of visible light in a pure, subtle, monolithic design. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Markus Fuerderer : Concept: 1 Half-Marathon (~100 Minutes); Visuals: 1 week; Prototype (mock-up): 1 month; .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Markus Fuerderer : When activated, the integral array transforms this transparent monolith into an omni-directional light source. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Markus Fuerderer : self explanatory: cube + OLED = cubeoled .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Markus Fuerderer : 12 transparent organic light emitting diode (OLED) panels are arranged in an orthogonal coordinate system and laminated in between 8 optical/clear crystal glass cubes. Via transparent circuit paths applied on the inner glass surfaces, the assembled OLED panels inside the resin-laminated monolith are supplied with electricity. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Markus Fuerderer : The research for this project was focused on the use of existing transparent OLED panels for illumination purposes. To date there aren't any luminaires existing that are based on transparent OLED technology. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Markus Fuerderer : The most challenging part of purist/minimalist designs are the details: In this case, it is the technology of minimizing the visible parts of circuit paths and OLED bezels. .
