Ammar Kalo : The main idea was to design a chair that consists of two interlocking parts. Its formal qualities express that moment of connection between the seat and the back. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Ammar Kalo : Seeking low-volume production after some tweaking and minor changes based on feedback from the current prototype. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Ammar Kalo : Designing this chair took about a month. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Ammar Kalo : I was interested in the practice of carving interlocking religious book stands from a single plank of wood. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Ammar Kalo : The design prototype was produced by myself, but it would be great if another company buys the production rights. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Ammar Kalo : It started as a project to learn how to operate a 5-axis industrial CNC milling machine. .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Ammar Kalo : The works of Hector Guimard, Antoni Gaudi, and Daniel Widrig. .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Ammar Kalo : Contemporary design enthusiasts. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Ammar Kalo : Stratum is the plural of the word Strata, a clearly defined layer, which refers to the striated section of laminated plywood. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Ammar Kalo : Lots of sketching, 3d printed scale models,McNeel Rhino, and T-Splines for Rhino .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Ammar Kalo : Technology played a very important role in this particular design. The chair was milled using a computer controlled milling machine and was also digitally modeled on 3d CAD software. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Ammar Kalo : Finding a delicate balance between the limits of the milling machine and design compromises. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. Ammar Kalo : Its an exciting opportunity to share my work with a larger audience. .Frank Scott: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?.
